Edward Gajdel has emerged as one of the world’s leading portrait photographers. His work is widely praised and has won hundreds of awards from an array of organizations such as American Photography to the World Press Organization. He has garnered the reputation of being the next Karsh of Canada with his iconic portraiture work. Inspired by the great masters of photography, Edward Gajdel’s creative style is poignant and is based on formalism and simplicity. His mission statement of “Beauty, Power and Grace” envelopes all of his images. Though passionate about the power of black and white photography his techniques and range of work are diverse.

For over thirty five years Edward has artistically created iconic images of his subjects for editorial, advertising fashion and corporate clients. From poets to politicians, actors to corporate leaders, his portfolio includes impressive and accomplished individuals from leaders of nations to the premier celebrities of Hollywood.

His work has been published in scores of prestigious photography journals and magazines such as GQ, Elle, Time, People, Fortune, Photo District News and the American Photography Annual. Both “Kodak International” and “P Magazine” – the international journal for Polaroid – recognizes Edward as one of the world’s best portrait photographers. In addition to these accolades, his body of fine art has also received critical acclaim from around the world. Possessing a pioneering spirit, he pushes the limits of photography while drawing on extensive analogue and digital disciplines. His work as been acquired by several collections including those of the Museum of Contemporary Photography, The Royal Ontario Museum and The Portrait Gallery as well numerous private collections.

He experiments with materials and techniques not typically used in the creation of fine art photography. As a result, the work conveys the spirit of a richly imaginative mind. Esteemed casting director, Michael Shurtleff said it best,” Edward captures the essence not the ego of his subjects.” The late Oscar Peterson said “I never feel as though I am merely having my photograph taken. I feel part of something larger something creative and lasting on film. Edward can capture what I want to say through music.” On every commission he rings an empathetic sensibility that draws him naturally to the essence of his subjects.

He recently took a creative sabbatical to process the various technological changes that have transpired in the visual language of photography. He dedicated time towards examining the realms of fine art, advertising and editorial to better understand how visual communication was evolving and how he would transform himself into a powerful communicator. Edward afforded himself the opportunity to study motion and sound and incorporated that knowledge into the creation of the nonlinear portrait©. Without abandoning his gift to channel the power of a moment in a still photograph, he now takes an expanded view of the traditional portrait and creates with the dimension of voice and motion to produce a succinct and intimate view into a persona. Edward’s new approach to making portraits is now beautifully aligned with modern sensibilities of rich media content.

Edward has mentored and lectured at several colleges and universities form the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology to Ryerson University, Humber College and Sheridan College amongst others. Semi annually for the past 15 years he has offered an internship to students who exhibit talent and dedication to their art. Giving back to the community is a theme in Edward’s life. Born in Poland and emigrating to Canada in 1967, Edward is keenly aware of the power of a compassionate community. That theme encompasses a number of socially minded causes for a host of charitable organizations, especially in the area of homelessness and children’s issues.

The creator of the nonlinear portrait©, Edward has pushed his medium to the next level in a digital age remaining true to the essence of his intentions and the subjects that grace his lens.

Currently Edward has accepted a commission to be the photo laureate for the SandBox Accelerator Inc. + 80ton Arts in Kitchener, Ontario.

Edward Gajdel: A picture paints a thousand words, and I could spend at least that many describing the accomplishments of Toronto-based photographer Edward Gajdel.  He’s recognized as one of the world’s best portrait photographers and has shot everyone from musicians to politicians.
