Istvan Kantor holds the distinction of being a recipient of the Governor General’s Prize for visual arts and my first subject for this body of work. Djanka and I were introduced to him by our friend George Whiteside at a gallery opening, and we both looked at each other knowing exactly what the other was thinking. “We’ve got to get this guy into the studio. What an amazing face he has.” Istvan proved himself to be a subject like no other. My shoot with him was like watching a human hurricane unfold. He engulfed the set like a seasoned rock star, throwing himself into a full body performance around an antique dental chair that had been in my studio for years waiting just for him to breath life into it. Istvan also provided a great interview for the nonlinear portrait™ series.
