About Beauty, Power and Grace

On this auspicious occasion of the launch of my first blog I feel that it is important to clarify the meaning of the words Beauty, Power and Grace. These words have been placed front and centre of my site to remind me of the qualities that constitute a great photograph. I am not suggesting that I’ve achieved this with every image presented I’ve simply installed a compass to keep myself on course. It is also important to place the meaning of these words into a context.

The meaning of Beauty is not limited to the aesthetic qualities that please the eye though those qualities are certainly included and important to me. In defining Beauty I am including the quality that allows one to appreciate the Divine order of a seemingly chaotic world. Simply stated, compassion is the key to understanding Beauty.

Power is the invisible quality that is ever present, unwavering, gravity is such a power. When a photograph possesses this quality one has the experience of being moved. A shift occurs that can be undetectable at that moment however it leaves a lasting impression that may surface to ones awareness much later or may bring a sense of awe immediately.

Grace is the compass that points one toward enlightenment. When one finds that quality in a photograph it will usually be accompanied with a sense of “aha”.  One will be drawn to a deeper level of understanding as essence is revealed.

I’ve spent nearly thirty years living in the intention of  great photographs, Beauty, Power and Grace are the distillation of that practice. I look forward to sharing what I’ve learned with you.
